Just outside the medina, almost opposite the Minaret de la Koutoubia, is a hotel so synonymous with Marrakech that its myths and legends are the same as the city's. This is La Mamounia, first opened in 1923 and completely revitalized in a 2020 renovation.

Our stay at la Mamounia was wonderful. We had a fantastic experience in a fantastic hotel which is an absolute jewel. That being said I have some negative comments: 1) There is too much air pollution and noise due to the vicinity of the city of Marrakesh. You cannot do anything about it, but it was sometimes disturbing. 2) In the Club terrasse or the Swimming pool restaurant we had sometimes multiple heavy cigar smokers that did really make the air bad and ruined the experience. It happened a few times. Please forbid cigars and have special places set apart for cigar smoking. 3) Restaurants were an excellent experience except for one: the Maroccan restaurant. The quality of the food there is unacceptable. We had Tajin, and couscous, and we know very well how this is made and cooked, as we travel a lot in countries where it is traditional. What we had was badly cooked food for tourists who have no idea what Moroccan food is. Bad experience at a very high price. A real shame.
